 Top 10 Anti-SJW and Top 5 Pro-SJW Sports

Social justice messages are everywhere in our society today.  They have gotten into the sports world in a big way.  It is not my contention that they shouldn’t be there or that they are wrong.  I maintain only that they are not consistent with mojo.  Consequently, I have made lists of sports in which you are least and most likely to be bombarded with social justice messages.  That doesn’t predict the future.  But I believe that most sports fans want a separation between sports and social justice.

There has always been and will always be politics in sports.  However, some people confuse the presence of patriotism with politics.   There is a place for patriotism in sports (think the Olympic Games with their flag waving and anthems).  Patriotism helps to get the watchers excited and psych up the players.  A positive message is conveyed.  Social justice, on the other hand, is intended to make the watcher question the country and/or its policies.  A negative message is conveyed.  This is not a helpful message for the fans or the players at the time of the contest.  This is not to say that there aren’t either positives or negatives about any country that can be identified.  However, sports are a questionable place for them.  At another time, these messages might be appropriate.  During sporting events, they aren’t.

With that in mind, here are lists of sports that are least and most likely to mix social justice into your sports experience.  They are listed in order.

  1. Rugby Union - It is most popular outside America and consequently shielded from our politics.  It features young, fit men in soccer shorts without face coverings or significant pads.  They are working hard towards a common goal.  You can stream the games or watch them free on YouTube.  What’s not to like?
  2. PGA Tour (men’s golf) - The players are easily identified and look like they could be your neighbor.  But, unlike you or your neighbor, they perform miraculous feats in eye-popping settings.
  3. NASCAR (stock car racing) - the quintessential American sport.  It is a little bit harder to see the guys and gals, but they talk just like you do, if you live in flyover country. Racers put their lives on the line, literally.  If this sport doesn’t excite you, ask yourself why?
  4. Pro Rodeo - Animal rights activists will get around to ruining this sport, I predict.  In the meantime, watch if you want to see very talented individuals trying their hardest to compete.
  5. LPGA (women’s golf) -  Women don’t hit the ball as far as men, generally.  But the skills are just as miraculous.
  6. High School Sports - Variety in both the type of sport and the amount of social justice that is injected.  Where else can you see Wrestling, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Archery, and the list goes on.  Not to mention a more hospitable environment to watch the major sports like football, basketball and baseball.  Catch the good players when they are young.
  7. Olympics - This is a tricky one because there are so many sports and governing bodies.  In addition, patriotism has always been a big part of the games.  When it turned political in the past, as it promises to do in the future, fans weren’t pleased.  They will watch until their sensibilities are offended.
  8. College Football - Like the Olympics, it will probably get more political.  The players are already realizing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights.  There is nothing inherently political about having these rights.  It is what might be done with them that has the potential to turn fans off.
  9. NHL (hockey) - Players are already showing signs of wanting to boycott team activities for various political reasons.  The only reason this is above soccer is that many of the players aren’t American and are not swayed by American politics.
  10. MLS (soccer) - Probably a little worse than hockey because more of the players are American.   The boycotts are already starting.

If you like to hear social justice messages in your sports, here is a partial, alternative list:
  1. NBA (basketball)
  2. NFL (football)
  3. MLB (baseball)
  4. Tennis
  5. College Basketball - do they still play?
