Top 10 Mojo Countries - COVID-19 - Scorecard

Two weeks ago, I named the countries that I thought would do well against COVID 19. In this post, I will tell you how they have done.

I consddered only countries with high case counts, now >3,000 cases per million because that seems to have lowered their susceptibility. As before, all of the numbers are from Wikipedia, realclearpolitics.com and ourworldindata.org.  Note that I son't agree with the political systems in some of these countries.
1. Singapore - over 10,000 confirmed cases per million but zero new deaths per million each day since July 28. They had a national lockdown from April 7th until June 1st. Their approach was consistent with their very strict culture. It might not work everywhere. As of September 3, they still have zero deaths. In fact, the last COVID death was July 15th.

2. Ireland - Biweekly deaths went down from 12 to 2. They have done very well. Nobody has died since the third week of August.

3. Sweden - Biweekly deaths went down from 42 to 17. They have done very well. Your chances of dying of COVID are quite small. They imposed no formal lockdown, so the economy was spared. This led to fewer deaths of despair. They exhibited tremendous mojo bucking much criticism.

4. Belarus - Bi-weekly deaths have risen. I missed this one. Maybe their numbers can’t be believed. Nevertheless, they had no lockdown. Quarantine was the approach taken.

5. United Arab Emirates - Bi-weekly deaths have risen. I missed this one too. However, the number of deaths hasn’t gone up a lot.

6. Portugal - Biweekly deaths went down from 46 to 41. They have done well. They still have some deaths, but they are decreasing. They had a national lockdown during wave 1 until May 2nd.

7. Italy - Biweekly deaths went down from 231 to 85. They had a national lockdown during wave 1 until May 18th. Considering the early results, they have done very well recently.

8. Switzerland - Biweekly deaths went down from 13 to 8. . No official lockdown, but many mitigation measures enacted. Although they haven’t experienced a huge number of cases, their death rate is tiny.

9. Netherlands - I put this in the missed category. Biweekly deaths went from 27 to 54. No official lockdown, but many mitigation measures enacted.

10. Austria - Biweekly deaths went down from 10 to 5. Your chances of dying of COVID are quite small. They had a national lockdown during wave 1 until April 13th.

In 7 of 10 cases, the number of deaths decreased. This is a pretty good record. If you were betting on these countries, you would have done very well. The numbers indicate that none of these countries have stopped the spread, even if they tried. Some imposed national lockdowns. Some didn’t. There continues to be some indication of a lowered susceptibility now. Cases around the world peaked around the end of July. That peak was very flat. So, it might take a couple more days or even weeks for confirmation to occur. I would still place my bets on these countries.
