How To Tell Who's Got Mojo

Image
Who Has The Most Mojo? In this post, I am going to discuss 5 ways a person in management or another authority figure can recognize who has mojo. In an earlier post , I asserted that mojo has various components. These components lead a person to have mojo, but they are not necessarily visible to outside observers. They may be intrinsic characteristics that a person quietly possesses. How do you KNOW if they have mojo? There is another set of characteristics that are exhibited by a person with mojo. Here are my top 5: Recorded achievemen ts - These are everyday results as opposed to end-of-season or end-of-year accolades. A person with mojo performs at a high level all the time. In sports, it would be the record during the season. For example, it might be seen in the batting average, quarterback rating hockey plus/minus, etc. Achievement is sometimes measured by the quality of work; other times by the quantity. In either case, it is worthy of note. Be careful with this because th...

These aren’t the most popular talks, or the best talks, or the talks by the most gifted speakers. They are chosen to help you. Here 's my list for you: Do schools...

How To Help Your Mojo By Reading More

Image
Reading For Better Mojo There are many reasons to read and many websites detailing them.  In a previous post , I gave my list of the top eight books to increase mojo.  You can read these or whatever else you want. Don’t worry if your reading is slow.  Some people (the lucky ones) read much faster t han average, some with excellent retention.  I believe retention is the true mark of proper reading.  This is why speed reading classes measure retention as well as speed. William F. Buckley Jr. was a slow reader, yet overcame this characteristic to understand  a broad variety of subjects. His knowledge was both broad and deep, and ranged from politics, to celestial navigation, to playing the music of J.S. Bach on the harpsichord. The easiest way to make your reading smoother is to create a proper reading environment .  First of all, you don’t want to be distracted.  I recommend turning off music, television, radio, and any other sour...

How To Gain Expertise

Image
Are You An Expert? In an earlier post , I postulated that expertise is an important contributor to mojo. What is expertise?   Merriam Webster says:that expertise i s 1: the skill of an expert 2: expert opinion or commentary Who is an expert? When is it okay to call yourself an expert? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this post.  Merriam Webster also says that an expert is “one with the special skill or knowledge representing mastery of a particular subject.”  It is these special skills or knowledge that need to be defined. Someone once said, wryly, that an expert is “ anybody with a briefcase who is more than 50 miles from home . While this is funny, it doesn't help us get to the definition of an expert. Most of us would hold a person to a higher standard than the quote suggests, even if it accurately describes the sentiments some feel on the job. Following are a few practical indicators of expertise.  No...
